The Ancient Tradition of Kantha

Kantha embroidery is a centuries-old textile tradition from India that transcends mere function. Imagine intricately stitched soft and textured fabrics, where every stitch tells a story.

Kantha’s rich heritage is interwoven with deep cultural significance and imbued with a timeless appeal. Come with us as we explore the captivating world of Kantha – unveil its history, learn the artistry behind each piece, and familiarise ourselves with the enduring legacy of this exquisite embroidery.

The Origin of Kantha

Kantha, a dazzling embroidery tradition from Bengal, boasts a history as rich as the mulberry silks used in its creation. Its origins, possibly stretching back to the Indus Valley Civilization (3300-1300 BCE), hint at a connection to ancient quilting techniques like applique, where scraps of fabric were stitched together for warmth and utility.

Traditionally, Kantha wasn’t just about aesthetics; it was a cornerstone of resourcefulness in Bengali households. Worn dhotis and sarees, often made of handwoven khadi or muslin, were given a new lease on life as functional masterpieces – lep kantha (warm quilts), stitched with the simple running stitch (darn stitch), tokras (cylindrical storage boxes) adorned with geometric patterns, and even alna (wardrobe storage) covers featuring intricate floral designs. Every stitch whispered a story of a mother’s love, a daughter’s coming-of-age, or a family’s heritage.

In rituals, Kantha played an auspicious role – newborns were cradled in Shona Kantha (quilts with tiny golden beads) for good fortune, and brides adorned with Baluchar Kantha (featuring mythological characters) for blessings.

The Craft of Kantha

Kantha’s magic lies not just in its vibrant stories, but also in its deceptively simple process. Here’s a glimpse into the heart of this beautiful embroidery:

From Sari to Stitchwork: The journey begins with fabric selection. Traditionally, Kantha embroidery was practised on old and discarded saris and dhotis, ideally made of breathable khadi or fine muslin. Today, artisans also tend to use recycled fabric or commercially available cotton. All our products are 100% handmade. They are made from scratch and either handwoven or handspun, based on the material, in traditional handlooms.

Designing the Narrative: The design stage can be as simple or intricate as desired. While geometric patterns like paisleys and checks are popular at present, the more traditional floral and mythological motifs continue to enjoy favour. In the past, kantha designs were almost always drawn freehand or traced using natural materials like charcoal. Nowadays, artisans sometimes use stencils or fabric markers too. At our label, we believe in promoting sustainable practices and use only natural dyes to print our designs.

From Sketch to Stitch: The heart of Kantha lies in the humble running stitch, also known as the darn stitch. Tiny, even stitches are made with a needle and thread, following the drawn lines. Skilled artisans can create incredibly dense stitching, almost like a second layer of fabric. In some regions, variations of the running stitch might be used, like the “kantha stitch” itself, featuring small, looping stitches on the surface with a straight running stitch on the back. Each Kantha saree, stole or dupatta you buy from us, has been handcrafted by expert karigars over days, weeks or months with patience and love.

A Tapestry of Techniques: While the running stitch reigns supreme in Kantha embroidery, regional variations often add a unique touch. In Odisha, the “appliqué technique” might be used to incorporate additional fabric pieces, or Gujarat’s “Shisha work” might add tiny mirrors for a touch of sparkle. These regional variations are often fused together by traditional artisans to depict and celebrate the rich tapestry of Indian textile traditions.

Certified with Care: Once the artisan has completed their embroidering work, the product is duly washed and readied to ship, following the strictest hygiene and safety protocols applicable. A rigorous high-standard quality check supports every item that is sold by our store.
